Congress demands women's reservation upto 50%

Jammu, Mar 15: Former Minister and Vice President, PCC, Yash Pal Khajuria- Chairman Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan J&K has hailed the historical decision of Union Cabinet for women reservation bill in the Rajaya Sabha with overwhelming majority. He said that the Union Cabinet has already taken the decision in its and approved the amendment of Article 243D of the Constitution to reserve 50 percent of the total number of seats in Panchayats for women. Khajuria was speaking in a meeting of party workers at Tikri (Udhampur) today. He described it an historical decision and urged upon the state Cabinet headed by Omar Abdullah to take similar decision, in the on going session and increase the reservation for women from 33% to 50%. He said that the Panchayat Elections are due in Jammu and Kashmir and if these elections held with the reservation of 50% quota fori women, the State will witness an historical step towards providing opportumty to women in the basic institution of democracy, congress leader added.
