| IGNOU holds 21st Convocation | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 15: In its Silver Jubilee year, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organised it 21st Convocation today at IGNOU Headquarters and simultaneously at its 43 Regional Centres including Regional Centre Jammu via tele-conferencing. Prof SK Joshi, Padma Bhushan awardee and former Director General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), delivered the Convocation address at IGNOU Headquarters at Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. Convocation through teleconferencing mode, at Jammu, was held at Auditorium, Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar. Director General of Police Prisons Department, J&K Dr Ashok Bhan, was the Guest of Honour on this occasion at Regional Centre Jammu and awarded Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates to the Learners. 1052 students from Jammu Region were eligible for their Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees out of which 245 students were distributed certificates in the Convocation function at Jammu. Five IGNOU friends including Prof Lokesh Koul, Dr Kavita Suri and 3 distinguished students were felicitated on the occasion. Dipti, wife of martyr Major Akash Singh, an alumni as well as a student of IGNOU, was also felicitated on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ashok Bhan, termed the concept of Open and Distance Education as novel and path-breaking one. Dr Bhan lauded the initiative of IGNOU to reach to the rural and tribal areas, low literacy areas, physically challenged, jail inmates and rehabilitation houses, government and non-governmetn sectors, employees and the employed, where education through conventional system was not possible for one reason or the other, thereby allowing them to have access to education through Distance mode of learning. Regional Director, KK Bhat, presented a report of Jammu besides throwing light on the achievements of IGNOU.
