| Mughal road project: Mustafa pooh-poohs NC's claims | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 15: Couple of days after the former Deputy Chief Minister, Muzaffar Hussain Beig had claimed credit for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for completion of Mughal road project, the former Minister and senior National Conference leader, Dr Mustafa Kamal today bashed the opposition for telling "lies" over this ambitious project. "The project, which was the long cherished dream of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, had been started by him (Sheikh) himself. In 1962, Sheikh Sahib went to Muzaffarabad for holding talks with his counterparts over the construction of road. Unfortunately, the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru who had expressed his desire over the project, passed away due to which project could not be taken off," said Mustafa Kamal while referring to the inception of project. Occasion was general debate on the budget for the year 2010-11 presented by the Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather in the Lower House on March 12. "Though the Sheikh Sahib had tried to start the project again after an accord with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1974-75, the project was not started due to unfavourable response of the neighbouring country." Taking a dig at the former Deputy Chief Minister, Mustafa Kamal said, "It was due to sincere efforts of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah the Central government agrees to provide 100 per cent funds for the project. Earlier, it the Centre had to bear only 50 per cent of the amount expended on this road." "Furthermore, when Farooq Abdullah was the Chief Minister in 1988 and I was one of the Cabinet ministers, about 35 per cent work on road was completed at that time. In fact, Sheikh Sahib himself had fulfilled his Mughal road project," he claimed. The senior NC leader while quoting holy Quran, advised the PDP leaders for not telling lies, saying "Sau Juth Ke Baad Bhi Juth Juth Rahta Hai…Sach Nahi Ban Jata Hai……………….." Soon after his speech on budget, it was the turn of firebrand PDP legislator, Peerzada Mansoor Hussain to take on the National Conference for claiming credit on the project. "No doubt, the project was the dream of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and one of the bridge measuring one kilometer in length was completed during the regime of Farooq Abdullah but it was the efforts of the Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that the work was started on war-footing and UPA chairperson, Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had personally visited the road," he said vociferously. "Dhanke Ke Chot Par Kehte Hai Ke Aur Aapko Bhi Manna Padega," he remarked. |
