| 62 foreign terrorists among 334 booked under PSA in 14 months | | # 96 civilians, 92 security jawans, 275 terrorists killed in militancy incidents since Jan 2009 | | ARTEEV SHARMA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 15: The Government has invoked Public Safety Act (PSA) on 334 persons for creating law and order problem in the State during the period between January 5, 2009 and February 14, 2010. Besides, 96 civilians were killed in the terrorist violence and law and order related incidents with effect from January 1, 2009 to March 1, 2010. Two civilians were killed in police custody and 92 security forces including local police personnel lost their lives during the same period. Official figures maintained that 275 terrorists were gunned down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir till March 1, 2010 since January 1, 2009. Interestingly, no incident of rape has reported during the period. Despite the fact that Shopian rape and murder case refers to the alleged abduction, gang rape and murder of two young women in mysterious circumstances on the intervening night of May 29 and 30, 2009 at Bongam, Shopian was not incorporated in rape category. According to the official reports, the government has booked 178 local terrorists, 31 separatists, 29 NDPS (timber smugglers and criminals), 62 foreign terrorists, 28 Illegal Border Crossers and 6 Bangladesh nationals under PSA during the past 15 months. 78 persons from Pakistan including Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) were detained while eight Afghanistan nationals were booked under PSA during this period. These figures were disclosed by the state government in reply to a question asked by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA, Abdul Rehman Veeri. Official reports further said that innocent 85 civilians lost their in the terrorist violence and other related incidents in 2009 while 11 such deaths have been reported during the first two months of this year. Out of total number of civilians killed in militancy related incidents last year, 53 lost their lives in Kashmir province while 32 deaths were reported in Jammu province. Two civilians identified as Rajneesh Sharma, son of Nanak Chand, resident of Sarwal Jammu (incident occurred at Ram Munshi Bagh police station) and Bilu Gupta, son of Kamal Kumar, resident of Patian Colony Ludhiana (police post Adhkunwari, Katra) lost their lives in police custody during the last fifteen months. Official figures said that 79 security personnel sacrificed their lives in 2009 and 13 jawans lost their lives till March 1, 2010 this year while fighting against militants. Reports added that 239 terrorists were also gunned down in 2009 while this number was reported to 36 till March 1, 2009 this year.
