| From 40,000 to 43 lakh mobile users in six years | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, March 16: In a short span of six years the total mobile subscriber base in militancy hit Jammu and Kashmir has risen from just 40,100 to over 43 lakh connections. According to a report prepared by the state government, there were only 40,100 mobile subscribers in Jammu and Kashmir in March 2004.But after sector was thrown open to private mobile service providers in year 2005, the mobile subscriber base jumped to over 2.60 lakh in just one year. Since then, the sector is growing each day despite facing numerous security restrictions and stiff competition among different service providers. At present, the total number of mobile subscribers in the state is over 43 lakh up to december 2009. Till December, while BSNL had a subscriber base of 9.7 lakh users, Airtel emerged as a leader with a base of over 17.2 lakh subscribers followed by Aircel having 14.8 lakh subscribers. Vodafone and Idea Mobile are still in the process of consolidating their presence in the state with a service base of 1.57 lakh and 11,000 subscribers. It may be mentioned that the union government had banned theuse of prepaid SIM cards in the state for over two months period between November 2009 and Jan 2010 and since then the service providers have introduced more stringent verification norms to avoid its misuse and falling in to the hands of militant outfits.
