| 119 National Highway projects are on in J&K, says Minister | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, MAR 16: Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways RPN Singh today stated in the Lok Sabha that the Centre has been funding as many as 119 highway projects in Jammu and Kashmir. Only Karnataka, Uttrakhand and Mahrashtra were ahead of the border State of Jammu and Kashmir in National Highway projects undertaken by the Centre as per the figures provided by the Minister to the members of the Lower House.
Giving countrywide details of such projects, he pointed out that the Union Government made an allocation of Rs 55,533.04 crore for development of National Highways across the country during last three years, or since 2006-07 to the current financial year or up to 28-2-2010. He said that thus far an expenditure of Rs 51,783.67 crore has been incurred. In all work has been going on 1,869 NH projects throughout the country as on 28th Februray this year. According to him, the highest number of projects were being executed in Karnataka (178), followed by Uttarakhand (174), UP (150), Maharashtra (133), Andhra Pradesh (119), Jammu & Kashmir (119) and Orissa (104). All NH works have been undertaken as per Ministry’s Standard Specifications for Road & Bridge Works and as per relevant Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines.
Where consistent non-performance on the part of contractors was noticed, they were placed in the list of non-performing contractors. Twenty contracting firms (13 Indian and seven foreign contractors) were found to be slack in their work by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). In a few cases, due to consistent non performance, existing contracts have been terminated. So far, 27 contracts have been terminated by NHAI, said the Minister.
