| Mufti’s support to women reservation a political gimmick | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu March 16 Former Union Home Minister and ex-Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir, Mufti Muhammad Sayed’s overtures on Women Reservation Bill may land the otherwise shrewd politician into trouble. Expressing happiness over the women reservation, Mufti feared that the implementation of the Bill may adversely affect the Muslim reservation. Mufti’s stand may not be received well by the minority community especially in the Valley who still have the memories of early 80s fresh in their minds. Political compulsions often force politicians to play the communal card and Mufti is no exception. However, being a shrewd politician, Mufti has played the card rightly at the right time. Malik Muhammad Yasin and his motorcade was attacked by unidentified goons, who according to a JKLF statement owed allegiance to Syed Ali Geelani. Mufti intends to fill the political vacuum which was created by the misunderstanding between Malik and Geelani at Sopore. Moreover, Mufti believes that Justice Sachar Committee had highlighted the problems faced by Muslims who according to him had been judged and perceived from `integration perspective’ only. Mufti could have done a lot for the community when he happened to be the Home Minister of the country. Similarly he could have taken measures on the basis of Sacher Committee recommendations during his regime as Chief Minister of the state. The politicians promise a lot when in opposition. But as soon as they get power they forget their promises. Welcoming reservation for women on one hand and on the other relating it with the share of minorities is nothing more than a political gimmick. It does not suit a leader of Mufti’s stature. . |
