| 'POLICE PULVERIZES PEOPLE IN SOURA' | | | Srinagar, July 24: At least five persons, mostly drivers and shopkeepers, were wounded when JK police personnel armed with guns, canes and sticks on Monday morning beat bus drivers, fruit vendors, hawkers and shopkeepers of Soura area of Srinagar for reasons better known to them only. Some of the injured persons alleged that butts were trained at them for no fault of theirs and said this has been a routine since long at regular intervals in the area. "Police forcibly made us to down our shutters and observe a strike a day after when unidentified assailants shot dead a cop near Sabzi market, Soura, and in the evening all of us were shocked to hear the news on television that shopkeepers, in protest against the killing, observed a strike out of their will," says a delegation comprising of locals and shopkeepers from Soura area who allege that the Station House officer of the local police station Suraj Singh has turned their lives hell there in the area. One cop namely Ghulam Rasool bearing belt number 2410 was shot dead by suspected militants recently near Sabzi market, Soura and after that complaints of harassment by cops have been pouring in. People belonging to entire Soura locality have been leveling accusations against the police of "unleashing a reign of terror in their hearts and minds". "Our women, elderly people, youth, and even children are beaten to the pulp, day in day out. Suraj Singh and his brigade behave more like renegades than police personnel. The SHO should be transferred from our area, immediately," said a bus driver operating from Soura bus stand who pleaded anonymity for obvious reasons. However, SHO Suraj Singh when contacted denied the allegations of police personnel thrashing people but admitted that after the killing of a cop some questioning was in process. "At the most we are questioning people and of course some shopkeepers who lie in proximity to the place where our constable was shot dead. This is all a questioning process, nothing more than that," Mr Suraj said. But people have entirely a different tale and version to share. "With lathis and big canes in their hands police personnel belonging to Soura station have been using brute force to target bus drivers, fruit vendors, shopkeepers and auto rickshaw drivers of our area for reasons better known to them only," says a local resident Majid Jehangir. The frightened drivers and fruit sellers say that their livelihood has been affected by the "inhuman" treatment meted out to them by cops. "Look and see for yourself how these police personnel have broken the side mirrors and window panes of my bus using mighty sticks," said another terrified bus driver.
