EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 17: The Government has set up Committees at District level to coordinate enforcement measures for checking road safety violations and avoiding road mishaps in hilly districts of the State. This information was given by Minister for Transport, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Qamar Ali Akhoon, in reply to supplimentaries on a question by Abdul Majid Wani, during Question Hour in Legislative Assembly, here today. Giving details, the Minister said that the Committees, headed by District Development Commissioners, with representatives from Traffic, Transport and other concerned agencies have been holding meetings on regular intervals to maintain coordination in the enforcement of road safety measures, including checking of over-loading, rash driving , driving licenses, ensuring adequate public transport on routes, maintenance and safety measures along the roads. Traffic, Police and Motor vehicle Departments have also launched special drives to conduct re-trials of drivers and fitness check of vehicles to avert road accidents and to prevent loss of precious human life and property, he added. The Minister said that to ensure availability of adequate transport, permits are being given at district level itself. He further said that SRTC passenger vehicles have also been deployed to supplement the requirement of public transport in such areas like the areas of erstwhile Doda District, additional SRTC vehicles have been deployed for Poonch, Shadra Sharief, besides areas of Gurez, he added.
