EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 18: The issue of cane charge on lawyers protesting against introduction of Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Bill in State Legislative Council today disrupted the proceedings of Lower House of the State Legislature during question hour.
As soon as the House assembled this morning, all the legislators of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) and Jammu State Morcha (JSM) were on their feet and condemned the police lathicharge on lawyers on Wednesday.
Shouting slogans against the government, the Opposition members alleged that the government has been following “suppressive” tactics to choke the voice of the lawyers who were raising their voice to protect the rights of their daughters and sisters.
“Yeh Sarkar Lathi Aur Goli Se Logo Ki Awaz Dawana Chahti Hai,” the furious legislator shouted. While Jugal Kishore Sharma labeled the Omar Abdullah led coalition government as 'Lathion Wali Sarkar’, the BJP legislator from Basholi Jagdish Raj Sapolia alleged this coalition government is trying to suppress the voice of people of Jammu region.
JSM MLA Ashwani Sharma also joined chorus with the BJP and Panther party legislators and protested the police lathicharge on lawyers.
At this point of time, the Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone intervened in the matter and urged the opposition members to speak one by one so that he could listen to them as nothing was audible due to din in the House.
Leader of BJP Legislature Party Leader, Chaman Lal Gupta said the way the state government was reacting to issues it virtually became the “government of cane charge.”
Referring to the issue raised by the lawyers of the Jammu Bar Association, Gupta said these lawyers were not out to create any law and order problem , they were only raising the issue of introduction of the anti-women bill in the upper house which could deprive the daughters of the state of their right to have state subject.
"We want sate government to clear its stand and give a statement in the House whether they want to run the state by using lathis only,” he asked. After Gupta concluded his speech several BJP legislators and Panthers party and JSM MLA Ashwani Kumar started raising slogans "Lathi, Goli Ki Sarkar Nahin Chaelgi Nahin Chalegi".
The high voltage drama continued for about six minutes after which speaker could manage to restore order in the house and question hour proceedings started in the house.
