| In spring, Valley gets a feel of summer | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 18: With the day temperature running 10 degrees above normal, the Valley gets a feel of summer in early spring. The unprecedented rise in temperature is likely to have a heavy toll on all crops and tourism. According to meteorological department (Met), the day temperature is running ten degrees above normal. “The beginning of the spring used to be very pleasant with temperature not exceeding 10-15 degrees. But during the past few days it has been recorded between 20-25 degrees”, said the Met office. The Met office said the increase in temperature was preventing western winds from entering Kashmir. “The possibility of western winds entering Kashmir during the next week seems quite bleak. This means the temperature will rise further.” the Met said. The Valley, it may be recalled, witnesses heavy rains in March. The rain besides ensuring timely bloom of almond and apple trees makes the beginning of spring very pleasant. The Met also predicted a very hot summer. “This year the temperature will have serious bearing on tourism industry and all the crops especially fruits”, Met said. “The fruits especially apple and pear grow and flourish in moderate temperature. If the situation does not improve around one million people involved in the fruit industry directly and indirectly shall be adversely affected”, the Met said. The increase in temperature will not suit the tulips which were imported from Netherlands by the former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. “If the hot wave continues, the tulips will survive only a week ”, experts believe. Apple growers across Kashmir are worried. At many places in Baramulla district, special prayers have been held for rains. “We want rain otherwise the trees will bloom prematurely and that shall spill disaster”, said Wali Muhammad of Tapper, Pattan in Baramulla district. He held devotional prayers Wednesday to invoke divine blessings. Contrary to common practice, the Valley people have opted for cotton clothes in March this year. Usually cotton clothes are used from May in Kashmir.
