| Governor, CM review status of off-site Campuses | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 18: Governor, N N Vohra and the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, have called for making the Universities in Jammu and Kashmir as centers of excellence to impart education of the highest standard to enable the youth of the State to compete with the best in the country, in all arenas. The Governor and the Chief Minister were addressing a meeting in regard to the status of the various off-site Campuses of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities at Raj Bhavan here last evening. The Governor and the Chief Minister took a detailed review of the Campuses, including the availability of land, necessary infrastructure and Faculty, selection of academic courses and financial resources. The Governor, who is the Chancellor of both the Universities, said that pragmatic approaches need to be adopted to continuously consolidate and upgrade university teaching standards so that the youth passing-out from the centers of higher learning compete successfully in all spheres. He said that, for this purpose, the essential infrastructure, faculty and other required logistics need to be put in place in a time-bound manner and upgraded continuously to meet the present and emerging requirements. Further, most careful consideration must be given to the selection of academic courses to be run at each center. The Governor stressed the importance of adopting a holistic approach to secure effective linkages at the school, college and university levels so that the education system in the State of Jammu and Kashmir is adequately equipped to ensure access to all segments of the society, while ensuring against any dilution whatsoever in the quality of education imparted at any of the Campuses. The Chief Minister asserted that his Government is committed to provide quality education to the youth and has taken several measures in this regard. He said that the educational institutions are being equipped with the best possible infrastructural facilities and trained human resource to achieve the desired results expeditiously. Omar asked the Vice Chancellors to very early finalise the detailed project reports for the establishment of the various off-site Campuses of both the Universities to equip these with the modern infrastructure. He said that the courses in the main as well as the off-site Campuses should be introduced after considering all the ground realities. The Minister for Higher Education, A G Malik put forth several suggestions for further improvements in the education sector. The Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof. Varun Sahni and the Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Prof. Riyaz Punjabi, made power point presentations on various aspects of the off-site Campuses. These included suggestions for offering demand-driven and employment-oriented courses in these Campuses and the required financial resources. The Commissioner/Secretary, Planning and Development, B. B. Vyas, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Raj Kumar Goyal and Commissioner/Secretary, Higher Education, N K Verma, participated in the meeting.
