| Controversial & non-academician from Kashmir may become VC | | Central University Jammu | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 18: Informed sources have shared some startling information with the Early Times. It is regarding the “move” on the part of certain “anti-Jammu forces in the Raj Bhawan” and “state government” to convince the “search committee, constituted by the concerned authorities in New Delhi, of the need of appointing controversial non-academician Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University, Avantipur, Sadiq Wahid, as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University, Jammu”. The search committee may meet even today. The move is fraught with dangerous ramifications. The appointment of Sadiq Wahid as the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University in Jammu would surely lead to serious protests as the awakened sections here have declared in the past several times that they would not allow any Kashmiri to function if the anti-Jammu authorities would select a person other than a Dogra. Their argument was, and is, that there is no dearth of academicians of repute in the Jammu province and that they were fed with the official policy that has always supported academicians other than those belonging to Jammu province. There are potent reasons to support their contention. It is no more a secret that the authorities have all through exhibited their bias in favour of persons from Kashmir. What may add to their anger is the “support” that has, according to the informed sources, emanated from “certain elements in the Raj Bhawan” against the “genuine claim of the Jammu-based academic community to the position”. The said sources are credible and, hence, a serious cause of concern for the people of Jammu province in general and the teaching community of the province in particular. According to these well-informed sources, “certain elements in the Raj Bhawan and government have recommended the name of Sadiq Wahid for his appointment as Vice-Chancellor of the Central University, Jammu”. It appears the said elements have not been informed about the credentials of the Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University. Had they been informed about the credentials of Sadiq Wahid, particulary his activities as Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor, University of Jammu, they would not have thought in terms of humiliating and insulting the teaching fraternity in Jammu by ignoring its legitimate claims and recommended the name of Sadiq Wahid. It is too well-know that Sadiq Wahid served the University of Jammu as Maharaja Gulab Singh Chair Professor for about nine months (2004-2005). During this short span of time, he flouted all the university rules with impunity. He visited several countries, including Pakistan, and participated in several seminars, some of which were anti-India, without seeking permission from the concerned authorities in the University of Jammu. He flouted the service rules despite several warnings and despite the fact that the University authorities did not release his salary for months together. The University authorities refused to release his salary despite the fact that the then Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo wanted to help Sadiq Wahid by going out of the way. He could release his salary only after one of the concerned administrative heads quit his position before time. It is also too well-known that Sadiq Wahid did not write a single paper on the history of Jammu and Kashmir during that period, nor later. In fact, he was not competent to write anything on the history of Jammu and Kashmir, as he didn’t know even the A B C of history. It was talk of the town during that period that he had managed his entry into the Jammu University only to use it as a launching pad and it turned out to be true. He could hobnob with the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed because of his views on Jammu and Kashmir and became Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University. There is still time for those lobbying for Sadiq Wahid or other Kashmiri academicians to reconsider their move. It would be better if the realize the gravity of the situation and ensure the appointment of a Dogra academician as the Vice-Chancellor of Central University, Jammu. Such a gesture would not only send a right signal, but also assuage the hurt feelings of the Jammu province-based teaching fraternity.
