| Employees' issues dominate LA business | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 19: Members in state Legislative Assembly (LA)-irrespective of their party affiliations- today stressed upon state government to concede the various demands being raised by the employees in order to avoid further agitation which is affecting the functioning of administration. Participating in the cut motions debate on Finance department, MLA (Independent) Abdul Rashid Sheikh said that solution to the stalemate between employees and government without having discussions is out of reach. He reminded the government that "It was assured to employees that COLA will be converted into DA but not done so far," adding, "Government should immediately consider demands of the employees." "Daily wagers serving in Power Development Department (PDD) should be regularized, demanded senior Congress leader and MLA Mohammad Sharief Niaz while participating in the cut motions discussion. Criticizing government on the fate of PSU employees, Independent MLA, Ashwani Kumar alleged that "Government has left the PSU employees in the lurch, saying "COLA into DA was not converted despite assurances by the government." While demanding the regularization of daily wagers, Kumar said that government should regularize the daily wagers who have completed seven years in service and especially those who have been serving different government departments over a decade with a hope that they would be regularized. "PSU employees who were previously considered as back bone of the Jammu and Kashmir state have been ignored by the government, alleged BJP MLA Ashok Khajuria while participating in the discussion. He said that "The wages of MLAs were enhanced but the employees were ignored government should shun indiscrimination and redress the employee's demands. Giving reference, Khajuria in his known style said "With the enhancement of wages of MLAs, the living standard also improved and, our children, who were previously studying in government schools, are now pursuing further qualifications in reputed schools at Dehradun and Dalhousie." He said that PSU employees have not received salaries since last 5 to 6 months and demanded wages should be released. PDP MLA Abdul Rehman Veeri also raised the issue of employees and alleged that migrant employees did not get salaries even on the occasion of Mahashivratri. MLA Radhey Sham demanded that the wages of daily wagers to be enhanced from Rs 110 to at least Rs 200 per day keeping in view the inflating prices of essential. He said that "The 'guards' expelled from Excise department 5 or 6 years back should be re-engaged in the same department." Senior leader of CPI (M) Mohammed Yousaf Tarigami while raising the same demands, said, "It was your government, who had agreed with the employees to convert COLA into DA." Besides state government employees, Tarigami reminded government not to forget Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) employees.
