| Politicians against thinning of security cover | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 21; IF the government had plans of giving the responsibility of maintaining law and order to the state police after withdrawing the paramilitary forces, there was also need for increasing the police man power by raising more than 20 battalions. He said besides increasing the man power, each const able and officer had to be equipped with sophisticated weapons. In addition to this, the entire transport and communication system in the police department need to be totally revamped. Sources in the police said that senior functionaries of mainstream political parties have been seen protesting against lack of security cover to their party leaders. In various cases, there has been demand for security cover to party leaders at the tehsil and block levels. Senior BJP leaders had even met the DGP, Kuldeep Khoda, recently demanding security cover to about eight of the party leaders. When there was no response, the BJP leaders met Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah and reports said that Omar had issued inst ructions to the concerned authorities to provide security cover to those BJP leaders who have not been provided any PSO so far. Except for the JKLF Chairman, Mohd.Yasin Malik, and Chief of Tehreek Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the rest of the leaders belonging to the separatist camps and those in the mainstream political spectrum have been seeking additional security cover. A senior police officer said that the security requirement to political leaders and senior bureaucrats was recently reviewed with the purpose of thinning down the security cover so that more policemen were available for maintaining law and order. He said the moment political leaders came to know of the Government plan, they raised a hue and cry forcing the top police authorities to sanction additional security. Sources said that most of the separatist leaders were under the security cover provided by the Government. He said that on an average more than 33 per cent of the total police manpower had been deployed to provide security cover to political leaders, senior bureaucrats, judges, journalists and some academicians besides former bureaucrats, police officers. Police said that the Government has sanctioned more than five constables for providing security cover to each senior retired police officers. Police authorities are of the opinion that the state Government should approach the central Government for securing sanction for raising at least five fresh battalions of the police.They said that once the recruitment and training of people for these battalions was completed there should be one clear inst ruction that not a single const able be deployed on security duty. All of them have to be posted for maintaining law and order.
