219 KPs killed in turmoil: 808 KP families living in Valley: Govt

JAMMU, Mar 23: The State government today said that as many as 219 Kashmiri Pandits (kPs) were killed in various militancy related incidents since 1989.
Of the total 219 deaths of Kashmiri Pandits, 129 were witnessed between March, 1989 and December 31, 1990. In a reply to a question of PDP member Syed Basharat Ahmad Bhukhari, the government said 808 families of Kashmiri Pandits, comprising 3445 souls, are still living at various places in the Valley.
The Government has disbursed Rs 1 lakh as ex-gratia relief to the Next of Kins (NOKs) of militancy victim Kashmiri Pandits while an amount of Rs 396,491,838 has been paid as compensation on account of damage to their properties since 1989.
Minister Incharge Revenue, Raman Bhalla said that while there as 38,119 Kashmiri Pandit families registered as migrants, 2,168 Muslim families and 1749 Sikh families were also registered as migrants with the office of the relief commissioner Jammu. He said that the government was looking after all migrants -- Kashmiri Pandits, Muslims and Sikhs, adding that the government is committed for their return and rehabilitation.
He further informed that 17 temples are under the occupation of security forces in the Kashmir Valley.
Responding to a supplementary by Choudhary Zulfikar Ali, the Minister informed the House that the Government has put a case with the Centre for giving relief to the migrants of Rajouri and Poonch at par with the migrants of the Kashmir Valley.
"While the Government claimed that situation has improved in Kashmir Valley, why the Muslim families migrated from Kashmir and putting up at Jammu doesn't return to their native places?" Chaman Lal Gupta questioned.
Raising objection over 'occupation' of temples by the security forces, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami sought rectification. The Minister reacted sharply and said that 17 temples are being protected by the security forces in Valley.
Engineer Abdul Rashid, MLA Langate sought legislation for protection of temples of KPs in Valley.
