Jammu district saw the highest depression among youth because of their "bleak" career prospects in view of the ever-rising unemployment. In a written reply during question hour in Legislative Council, the State Home Department said a total of 118 state youth committed suicide in 2009 as compared to 122 in 2008. The department said no incident of suicide was reported from Leh, Kargil and Poonch districts in 2008 and 2009. Jammu district with 22 suicides topped the list followed by Anantnag district with 20 suicides, it added. Srinagar and Kulgam districts recorded eight suicides each. There were 80 and 60 suicides reported in Jammu region in 2008 and 2009 respectively and 42 and 58 in Kashmir region in 2008 and 2009, the chief minister said. The department said the main reasons behind suicide were unemployment, financial stress, high expectation of parents from their children in examinations and incompatibility in relations between married couples. Doctors were being trained at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Science, Bangalore, to deal with problems such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorders and anxiety which forced youngsters to commit suicides. |
