Sandeep Bhat
Early times report
At young age of 35, Nazir Ahmed Gurezi is returning to house second time by defeating Faquir Mohammad Khan of Congress. Nazir had won 2002 election, as he polled 5,782 votes defeating his nearest rival Faquir Mohammad, an independent candidate, by 1,250 votes. Faquir Mohammad polled 4,532 votes. While as the total votes polled were 10,817, the poll percentage recorded in 2002 elections stood at 76.48. Early Times Correspondent talk to MLA Gurezi in detail. Some of the excerpts. As far as my constituency is concerned he said it remains cut of with the rest of the state for seven months and becomes impossible to work in my area. The winter months are very harsh and being a far flung area it become inaccessible. There is good potential for tourism in Gurez and it should be boosted. From the last couple of years the Gurez festival is started and is being organized on 12th and 13th of June every year where both domestic as well as national tourists are visiting to enjoy the festival. In my view lots it to be done to promote the large tourists potential in my area and the government should take considerable steps for its promotion. We have many problems, being a far flung area there is no electricity, no proper drinking water, no proper roads and health care. Our coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah is taking positive steps in redressing the genuine problems of the people and hope that this government will do lot more. Krishan Ganga project is under construction but as per memorandum of understanding there will be no power given to the local people from this project. One more power house is being constructed at Bandipura but only 2% power will be given to Gurezi people. I appeal to my government that they should make mini hydel projects at Dawar, Kanjalwan and Tilel area. There is shortage of doctors including physicians as well as surgeons and scores of people die due to improper health care. Our road is connected to Gilgit (POK) which is popularly known as silk route where trade was being done to Gurez-Gilgit-Central areas. I strongly advocate the opening of Gurez -Gilgit road and construction of internal between Bandipura to Gurez besides over head tunnel between Peerbaba to Zkhushi. Regular helicopter service is not provided by the government and our sheena language should be included in the constitution. As you know our working season is limited as well as the government has promised that the funds given in our area will be non lapsable and hope that my coalition government under dynamic CM Omar Abdullah will do in this regard. I am thankful to my chief minister for staying in my area for a night as it shows his sincerity and dedication towards the people of area. He is the only chief minister of the state who has stayed for a night. Our coalition government is doing a commendable job and will complete its full term.
Electoral Background
Gurez is a relatively new constituency and was carved out in Aril, 1995 in pursuance of J&K Representation of People's Act 1957. Faquir Mohammad, an independent candidate, first represented the constituency in 1996 elections. Gurez constituency most remains disconnected from rest of Kashmir valley for four to five months a year due to heavy snowfall and poor communication links. This segment has a tradition of massive voter turnout as could be seen during 1996 and 2002 elections. |
