| Mega marketing campaign for handicrafts on cards | | |

Jammu, Mar 24 : In order to earn bigger amount of foreign exchange, the state Government has decided to lay empahsis on the promotion of the sectors of handlooms and handicrafts .Official reports said that carpet export has been the major source for foreign exchange earnings after the export of dry fruits,especially walnut, and saffron. Reports said that the rise of militancy and the global economic meltdown during the last two years had affected the carpet production in Kashmir and its export. The Government has decided to take in hands several measures for further development of these sectors . Official sources said that to begin with the Government has decided to facilitate a mega marketing campaign during the ensuing Commonwealth Games in Delhi for craftsmen and small traders of handicrafts to clear their stocks.
In order to upgrade Pashmina, Kanishawal and Sozni, a laboratory is being set up in Srinagar at a cost of Rs 4.62 crores. In addition, crafts of Kanishawl, Pashmina and Sozni have been brought under the purview of Geographical Indicators.
The Government has decided to modernise 40,000 carpet looms at a cost of Rs.120 crores for which a prototype was being developed in the Institute of Carpet Technology in Srinagar.
Another decision is to provide 50 to 75 per cent subsidy on premium for health insurance cover to handicraft artisans..This step was to ensure better health cover to these poor artisans so that they were able to put in their best for the production of quality handicraft items.
After the Jammu and kashmir Government has succeeded in persuading the centre to restore all the industrial incentives for a period of another 10 years a massive campaign has been launched for attracting industrialists for setting up their units in the state. Official sources said that a two-pronged strategy is being prepared for helping industrialists in reviving their sick units for which the Government has agreed to provide soft loans. |
