| Factionalism resurfaces in BJP after filling party posts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 25: Even though Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the new team of office bearers for the state unit, the saffron brigade in J&K continues to be a divided house. The newly elected state President, Shamsher Singh, tried hard to give a chance to the youth while making appointments for the posts of vice presidents, general secretaries and the secretaries but the decision, it seems, has further given a boost to factionalism with in the party. Initially, the group led by BJP Legislature Party leader in State Assembly Prof Chaman Lal Gupta and former state president Ashok Khajuria, is reported to have played a key role in the selection of Shamsher Singh as the party President. Number of senior party functionaries besides the RSS lobby was interested in the selection of either MLA Jugal Kishore or Bali Bhagat for the President's post. Bhagat and Jugal Kishore were supported by Dr Nirmal Singh too. However, Chaman Lal Gupta and Ashok Khajuria succeeded in casting the high command's dice in favour of Shamsher Singh. The two big-wigs of state BJP had expected Shamsher Singh to select the office bearers only after consulting them. Party insiders said that BJP president had discussed the matter of selection with the two and in order to keep Prof Gupta in good humour, shamsher Singh picked up his son, Anil Gupta, for the post of vice president. As far as other posts were concerned Shamsher Singh had his own say and once he made up his mind he visited Delhi to seek concurrence from the party high command. Party sources said that the RSS leaders besides Dr Nirmal Singh and other senior functionaries were not happy with the selection of people for various party posts. Sources confirmed that the appointments made have strengthened groupism in the organisation. However, reports said that as far as the BJP legislature party was concerned Prof Gupta as leader of the party, has been instrumental in forging unity among all the 11 MLAs. Though there is groupism even in the legislature party but as far as floor management is concerned the BJP MLAs have been directed to demonstrate unity of purpose. It is because of this direction that whenever the BJP leadership decides to stage a boycott all the 11 members come out of the House. Whenever it is decided to disrupt the House proceedings all the 11 MLAs are seen on their feet shouting slogans and gesticulating against the treasury benches. Reports said that the dissidents in the BJP have been directed by the party high command to fall in line and avoid precipitating any fresh conflict in the wake of ensuing local bodies' election.
