| Over 2 lakh cases pending in J&K courts | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 25: The State Law department today informed the Upper House of the State Legislature that a total number of 2, 37, 775 cases (including civil and criminal) are still pending in the High court and subordinate courts of Jammu and Kashmir. Out of total number of 2,37,775 pending cases 53, 356 are civil and 2232 criminal cases are pending in the High court of the J&K while 65,820 civil and 116367 criminal cases are pending in the different subordinate courts across the state, minister incharge law and Parliamentary affairs informed the house today. He said at present out of 14 sanctioned strength of the High Court Judges only 9 judges are working and five vacancies are still pending. Giving details of the steps being taken to reduce the pendency in the courts the minister informed the house that in the year 2008 12 courts of district and sessions judge and 2 courts of sub judges were created in the state. Lok Adalats have also been held throughout the state to settle cases of various natures by mediation and reconciliation. The steps have been beneficent in reducing the pendency. The code of civil procedures samvat, 1977 has been amended in the year 2009 to ensure speedy disposal of the cases and these include settlement of disputes outside the court through arbitration, conciliation, judicial settlement and mediation. No further or second appeal in certain cases as per amended section 101 A and 102 of the said code.
