| Abrupt jump in infiltration attempts in J-K | | | NEW DELHI: An abrupt increase has been witnessed in infiltration attempts by the Pak-based militants from across the borders in Jammu and Kashmir since the beginning of this year. At least 60 attempts were made by the militants to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir since January this year, sparking "serious concern" in the government. All intelligence inputs suggest that desperate attempts were being made from across the border to make up for the "lull" in terrorism in 2009. The abrupt jump in infiltration attempts between January 1 and March 20, 2010 led to 40 encounters between security forces and militants which left 38 ultras dead. "The successive attempts of infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir is a matter of serious concern as many of the militants have been able to cross over into India," an official said. Last year was the most peaceful in Jammu and Kashmir in more than a decade with violent incidents dropping by nearly a third over 2008.
