| NSUI holds protest against degrading transport system | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 26: National Students Union of India (NSUI) today held a protest against the degrading transport system in the State and the increasing number of problems being faced by the commuters. A large number of activists of NSUI under the leadership of Abdul Rashid Choudhary, State President NSUI and stopped the vehicular movement for about half an hour and proceeded towards the office of the Transport Commi-ssioner and surrounded it. Addressing the gathering, Rashid expressed shock on the degrading transport system in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that it was a shame that even after the enormous growth in the transport problems, the State did not have any road transport policy. He asked the policy makers to wake up. He asked the Transport Commissioner how many more accidents and deaths he wanted before framing any proper transport regulating policy in the state. He also raised the issue of fare concession being given to the student community. In long route buses, superfast buses and buses of private bus operators, the student concession is an alien concept. They either charge full fare or don't pick up the students. Even in ~he short distance buses and matadors, quarrels over fare concession are a common sight. This privilege has turned into a mockery with the sentiments of the student community. He warned the transport department that if the matter is not looked into on priority basis the students will come on the roads against such operators and the transport department will be responsible for any consequences that follow. He warned the department not to check the patience and stop teasing the student community otherwise it shall lead to serious and disastrous consequences. Other prominent leaders who spoke on the occasion included Aijaz Mehar (State Vice President), Raj Kamal Arya, Arjun Singh Pathania , Fairoz Khan ((State General Secretaries), Amit Manhas, Gurdev Singh Thakur, Riaz Faisal, Adatiya Badyal, Ashwani, Chetan Misri, Ajay Kumar, Riaz Ahmed and Varun Dev Singh.
