| Academy stages Shanker Shesh's master piece "Fandi" | | | early times report Jammu, Mar 27: Fulfilling its mandate of being the custodian of state's socio-cultural affairs, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages staged Shanker Shesh's prominent play "Fandi" at Abhinav Theatre on Saturday. The play was directed by NSD trained theatre director, Mipham Otsal. "The play Fandi portrays the desperate feelings of a son who has to mercy kill his father for want of money and medical aid," says Otsal, the director of the play. To be precise Fandi focuses on the agony of the father and the limited options that his son had with regard to his father. Unable to bear the torture that his father was facing because of cancer, poverty ridden Fandi was left with no other option but to kill him. "This is where a new phase of life begins for Fandi," Otsal says. Narrating the plot Otsal says that real challenge of Fandi begins soon after he kills his father at the latter's request. Subsequent to killing his father to relieve him of his severe pain and agony, Fandi encounters the charge of having killed his father. Being penniless, Fandi is provided a lawyer by the government. "The real thing comes to the fore when the tarnished action of the son appears to be a compulsive act to bring an end to the misery of the cancer patient writhing in pain," the director says. Through Fandi the playwright brings to the fore the inner turmoil that Fandi's character faces after killing his father and the mental agony that he has had to bear subsequent to the mercy killing. One of the prominent highlights of the play was that instead of passing a judgement, the playwright leaves it up to the audience to give their verdict in Fandi's case. "This is what makes Fandi a master piece," Otsal says. Watching the play proved a visual treat for the audience who virtually thronged the Abhinav Theatre so as to watch the play. Those who participated in the play as actors included Anil Tickoo, Neeraj Kant, and Sanjeev Gupta. The music for the play was composed by Bhupinder Singh while sound was taken care of by Lokesh Chander. Jai Ram and Pankaj Sharma took care of lighting. Before the play could formally begin, noted theaterist and columnist, Jugal Koul read a paper tracing the history of the World Theatre Day and said that theatre was not 'just drama'. "Theatre is not just a drama. It is an event of life," Koul conveyed through his paper which was specifically written for the World Theatre Day which falls on March, 27 every year. Earlier Secretary Cultural Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas welcomed the guests and announced that the Academy would hold theatre workshops across Jammu in April this year. "The Cultural Academy plans to hold theatre workshops in Jammu in April this year. Hopefully, this would give further fillip to this segment of performing arts," Zafar said in his address, adding, "The play was staged today on the World Theatre Day so as to highlight the essence of theatre".
