Tourism Entrepreneurship Development Summit begins

JAMMU, Mar 27: The state's first Tourism Entrepreneurship Development Summit (TEDS) 2010 - A Business Plan Competition jointly organized by Jammu & Kashmir Entrepreneurship Development Institute (JKEDI) and School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM), University of Jammu began here today.
The event was inaugurated by Kanji Lal Gour, Executive Director, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO); Prof Sandeep Kulshrestha, Indian Institute of Travel and Tourism Management (IITTM); Riju Raj Jamwal, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and instructor of River Rafting and founding member of Indian Rafting Foundation, Prof Neelu Rohmetra, Director, The Business School; Dr M I Parray, Director, JKEDI and Prof Deepak Raj Gupta, Director, SHTM were the special guests / experts at the inaugural function.
The two-day summit has been coordinated by Vishal Ray, Assistant Faculty, JKEDI and Anil Gupta, Assistant Professor, SHTM, JU.
The summit intends to create awareness amongst the professional and technically trained youth of the state to undertake entrepreneurship as a career option and to provide a forum to the professionally educated youth with entrepreneurial acumen to showcase their dreams and help them in realizing their dreams with a help of government agencies of the state.
About 55 management graduates representing 6 University Departments / Institutes including TBS, JU; SHTM, JU; SMVDU; IMS; MIET and Kathua Campus JU are taking part in the event.
During the event, the management graduates were expected to submit a business proposal in the domain of hospitality and tourism.
In addition to the cash awards to the top three winning business proposals, the top teams shall be eligible to seek technical, commercial and financial assistance (non-refundable 35% of the project cost, maximum up to Rs 7.5 lakhs for individuals and Rs 10 lakhs for group initiative) from JKEDI under seed capital scheme of SKEWPY subject to fulfillment of the policy conditions so that the students are able to start their own enterprise.Speaking on the occasion, M I Parray, Director, JKEDI and Summit Secretary, briefed about the objective of TEDS 2010. While addressing the youth he said that their participation reflects that they have the passion for tourism and inclination for entrepreneurship.
In his address Kanji Lal Gour, said through entrepreneurship one can conquer the entire world.
While addressing the gathering, Prof Sandeep Kulshrestha said that tourism industry is a sunrise industry and has tremendous growth potential in domestic as well as international market and therefore require optimistic professionals and entrepreneurs to exploit the opportunity. He said that for Jammu & Kashmir, tourism is passport to peace and prosperity.
Riju Raj Jamwal, Prof Neelu Rohmetra and Prof Deepak Raj Gupta also spoke on the occasion.
