| Cultural Academy honours Dev Dass | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 27:
As a part of its “Meet The Eminent Personality” programme series, the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages organised an interactive meet with noted painter, Dev Dass at Kala Kendra here today. Born in 1934 Dev Dass has carved a niche for himself in the field of painting and has the distinction of having made portraits of Dogra legends like Maharaja Gulab Singh, Maharaja Pratab Singh and Maharaja Hari Singh apart from other personalities of repute. Impressed by the art works of Dev Dass, Prof Lalit Gupta read a comprehensive paper on the painting guru. “Dass’s track record sets him apart from other painters of his ilk,” Lalit informed the gathering through his presentation, adding, “Felicitating such legends is an honour for the Academy itself”. Earlier in his welcome address, Secretary Cultural Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas also echoed Lalit’s words. “It is really a matter of honour that the Cultural Academy is honouring a man of Dass’s stature,” Zafar said, adding, “Such type of felicitation functions would be continued in future also”. Interestingly, this was for the first time that a painter had been invited under the “Meet the Eminent Personality” series of the State Cultural Academy. “We usually invite literary personalities under the series. But now, by inviting him, we have set a precedence which would be replicated in future also,” Zafar informed those present on the occasion. Delivering his presidential address, noted sculptor ND Jamwal also spoke highly of the painter. “Dass does not require introduction of any kind. He is a living legend who has proved his worth through his work,” Jamwal said. As part of the interactive programme a shawl, citation and a bouquet was also presented to Dev Dass by Secretary Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas. The programme proceedings were conducted by Editor English, Abid Ahmad while Additional Secretary Jammu, Savita Bakhi presented the vote of thanks. Meanwhile a painting exhibition showcasing the rare paintings of Dev Dass was also inaugurated at Kala Kendra by Secretary Academy, Zafar Iqbal Manhas. The exhibition will remain open for three day’s beginning today.
