2 militants, jawan killed in Shopian gunbattle
7 soldiers wounded in militants’ ambush

Srinagar, Oct 13 : At least two militants and a jawan were killed in an encounter in Shopian area, while seven army jawans were injured in an ambush by the militants near Baramulla town in North Kashmir.
Official sources said that fierce gunbattle between the security forces and militants, which started Thursday evening, ended this afternoon. Both the militants, who were holding up, in the house of an advocate were shot dead, they added.
Giving details, an official spokesman told News Agency of Kashmir that acting on a tip off about the presence of militants, security forces and police cordoned off a residential house at Aliyalpora village near Shopian, 70 km from Srinagar, on Thursday afternoon.
When the troops were zeroing in they came under heavy fire killing one jawan on the spot and wounding another, sources said adding, the fire was returned leading to a gun battle. The operation was reportedly suspended late last evening owing to the darkness in the area.
“We resumed the operation this morning and managed to kill both the militants”, a senior police officer told NAK. The identification of the slain militants could not be ascertained immediately
Meanwhile, a group of heavily armed militants ambushed an army convoy near Baramulla town of North Kashmir injuring about seven jawans, three of them critically.
Sources said that an army convoy was on its way from Baramulla to Srinagar, when unidentified militants ambushed it at Kansipora village, seven km from Baramulla town, with automatic rifles and grenades.
The militants reportedly opened fire from two different directions. The soldiers, who were taken to surprised, returned fire but not before seven of them received bullet injuries.
“The reinforcement was also sent to the area and a combat operation to track down the militants responsible for the attack was going on till this evening”, a police officer said. He added that the injured jawans were shifted to a nearby army hospital, where condition of three of them was stated to be critical.
