| Success for troops: 9 LeT ultras killed across J&K | | LeT cadres using GPS for infiltration | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 27: It was a day of successes for troops, who killed nine top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists, including a district commander, Saturday in three gunbattles across the state amid the foiling of an infiltration bid on the Line of Control (LoC) from Keran in Kupwara, Kashmir. A defence spokesman said all the three operations were so meticulously planned that there was no casuality on the part of troops. The spokesman said an army patrol picked up the movement of at least five militants after they sneaked into Keran sector in the morning. When the troops challenged them, they opened fire, which was returned. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the troops shot dead five infiltrators whose identity was yet to be ascertained. All were, however, believed to be Pakistanis. A large quantity of arms and ammunition was recovered from them. Searches were continuing in the area when reports last came in. Sources said the place where the encounter took place had 12-15 ft of snow. Another severe blow was inflicted on LeT in Rajouri when Uniform Force troops eliminated two Pakistani terrorists in a fierce gun battle at Kalakot. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in Kalakote forests, troops laid a cordon around the area at about 9 am. Sources said while they were making searches, two LeT militants opened fire on them from a nullah. Fire was returned. Both the militants were killed in an exchange of fire that lasted over two hours. The slain militants were identified as Abu Osama and Abu Sorab, both Pakistanis. Two AK rifles with 8 magazines, 214 rounds, one Chinese pistol with 3 magazines and 15 rounds, one solar charger, two radio sets with 2 chargers, one Global Positioning System (GPS), one satellite phone charger, a sophisticated compass, a map sheet, a matrix sheet, two UBGL grenades, one binocular, two handgrenades, medicines and eatables were recovered from their rucksacks. The recovery of the high-end GPS shows that militants are using GPS for cross-border infiltration and locating safe routes in Jammu and Kashmir. "Militants are using GPS for finding infiltration routes and tracks for movement within J&K. The satellite based navigation system is being used by militants as a guide in mountainous terrain," Superintendent of Police (SP), Noushera, RK Bhat said. Another encounter took place between militants and a joint column of police and army in Merul nullah, nine km north of Kishtwar, late Friday night. Two top Lashkar militants, killed there, were identified as LeT district commander Rehmatulla alias Saifullah and Nissar Ahmed Parrey. One AK rifle and one Chinese grenade were recovered from them. While Nissar had joined LeT ranks in the recent past, Saifullah was a dreaded terrorist. LeT which had virtually been wiped out from the area was in the process of revival under Saifullah. He was regularly on the lookout for new recruits. To fulfill his motives, he was in regular contact with his mentors across the border, the sources added. Saifulla was mastermind in several cases. Recently he was seen in a video where he sang a song to free Kashmir.
