| Gujjars start seasonal migrations in advance | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 28: The Gujjar Bakerwal tribes have started their bi-annual seasonal tribal migrations towards upper reaches of Shivalik, Pir Panchal and Trikuta hills by one month ahead of their routine schedule, due to un-usual rise in daily temperature in northern states of India including Jammu and Kashmir. It is after 29 years when these nomadic tribes had preponed their seasonal migration because of abnormal variation as dry March has caused maximum temperature to rise above normal level by eight to twelve degrees. A hand out of Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation-an organisation working for Gujjars, said in normal circumstances the nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwals who reside in the plain areas during summer starts their seasonal migration towards Himalayas around or after third week of April every year but this year due to un-usual increase in temperature they were compelled to prepone their onward journey by one month. According to Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary of Tribal Foundation this natural preponement of seasonal nomadic migrations will badly affect their tribal economy and social set-up. He said due to preponement of their seasonal migration, they will have not only to face brunt of heat during migration process but also fight with acute shortage of fodder in upper areas. In this extra ordinary situation, the Foundation impressed upon various organizations working for tribal affairs in Jammu and Kashmir to mobilize their resources for providing necessary logistical facilities to these nomadic tribes. According to oral history of tribal Gujjars, earlier they had faced same type of unusual temperature, way back in 1979 when they had preponed upper migration by one month, said Dr Javaid Rahi.
