| Rs79 cr disbursed among 1693 NOK's of deceased Police Personnel: Khoda | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 28: Director General of Police (DGP), Kuldeep Khoda today said that Jammu and Kashmir Police Organization has launched several schemes for the welfare of its personnel and their families. He said that during last one decade, Rs.79 crores have been paid to benefit 1693 families of deceased Police Personnel out of Special Contributory Police Welfare Fund (SCPWF). The DGP was speaking at a meeting held here today, under his chairmanship, to review the implementation of various police welfare schemes in the State. He emphasized to enhance various welfare measures for the families of police personnel and stressed upon the officers for quick disbursement of welfare relief to the families of the police personnel who lay down their lives while performing their professional duties. Giving details about SCPWF, Khoda said that families of martyrs get a relief package of Rs.13.50 lacs while as those who die in harness, because of accidents or natural causes, are given Rs.8.50 lacs which includes Rs.6 lacs from Special Contributory Police Welfare Fund. In addition Rs. 2.50 lacs are paid as insurance claim. However, the families of martyr's get additional Rs.5 lacs as ex-gratia relief, Khoda added. The DGP also said that this special relief package has been possible because of the initiation of Special Contributory Police Welfare Fund which was started way back in 1983. Khoda said that during militancy the amount paid to the families was doubled from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1 lakh with meager monthly contribution of Rs.27. At the inception of scheme the families of deceased police personnel were being paid just Rs. 14,000 only. The relief was further increased to Rs. 2 lakh in 1999, Rs.4 lakh in 2001 and Rs.6 lakh in 2003 with corresponding increase in the monthly contribution from the constables from Rs. 60, Rs. 110 and Rs. 200 respectively. This fund is being utilized only for paying a standard amount of Rs. 6 lakh to the families of deceased police personnel and there is no other expenditure made out of this fund. However, the monthly contribution for this fund from higher ranks varies between Rs. 220 to Rs.300, Khoda added. The DGP stressed that the funds should be audited and balance sheet prepared regularly to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of this welfare scheme. The meeting also discussed the possibility of increasing the relief fund from present Rs. 6 lakh, and it was resolved that the final decision in this regard would be taken by the Central Police Welfare Fund Committee in its next meeting
