| New book throws light on Kashmir in Nehru era | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT NEW DELHI, MAR 28: A new book by a former infantry officer in the Indian Army-turned-academician Srinath Raghavan looks into the early years of Kashmir tussle between India and Pakistan besides other important strategic matters faced by first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. This soon to be published tome called War and Peace in Modern India: A Strategic History of the Nehru Years deals with the formation of Indian Union where nearly 500 princely States, including that of Jammu and Kashmir, had to give way to the new republic virtually fought for and founded by Nehru along with few others. Nehru's handling of the Kashmir dispute and border conflicts with Pakaistan and China have extensively been dealt with in the book and this is evoking keen interest among scholars on South Asia ever since first few copies of the book have been circulated for the sake of a review. Among other things the staunch Nehru-Sheikh Abdullah friendship also figures prominently in the book that looks history from the point of view of strategy, diplomacy, conflict and efforts that go in to solve this. The book is a result of extensive research undertaken by the writer to look at documents and sources on the subject strewn through the archives and libraries spread across the world. Raghvan is a senior fellow here at the Centre for Policy Research and also a lecturer in Defence Studies at King's College, London from where he earlier took his MA and PhD in Defence Studies. He has also served infantry division of the Army for six years before making academics in full time occupation.
