| Dogri falls prey to govt's lackadaisical approach | | | CHAMAN KAUL EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 28: Contrary to the government claims that it was committed to the promotion of Dogri at all levels, it was yet to make the subject compulsary at primary and middle standards in Jammu region. At 12th level too, Dogri stands introduced only as an optional subject. Though the government claimed that all educational institutions in the state were equipped with requisite staff and other infrastructure, Dogri was yet to receive the due attention. Sources said the greatest impediment on the way of development of Dogri was the lackadaisical approach of the government. Education minister Peerzada Mohammad Syed informed the legislative council few days back that 94,076 students were being imparted knowledge of Dogri language in about 4,678 institutes across Jammu region. There were, however, no takers of the language in Rajouri, Poonch, Doda and Kishtwar districts where no student had opted for Dogri in the past two years, he added. In Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi and Ramban districts, Dogri was being taught in 14 colleges. Earlier, it was being taught in four colleges only. While Jammu had the highest number of 27,220 Dogri students, Ramban had the lowest number of 2,981 students. After its inclusion in the 8th scheduled of the Constitution on December 22, 2003, Dogri was introduced at primary and upper-primary levels as a subject. As per the official data, all the upgraded schools in the state had adequate strength of staff and infrastructure, but it was a hard fact that languages like Dogri were being given a step-motherly treatment. Even at the university level, Dogri and Sanaskrit were not being given due attention for their promotion.
