3/28/2010 11:23:48 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 28: Following apprehensions about increase in the number of intrusion bids into J&K by the Pak-based militants this summer, army has decided to deploy Military Intelligence (MI) personnel on the borders along with the regular troops and modern devices.
The MI personnel would help in gathering advance information about the infiltration attempts and also keep an eye on the activities of suspicious persons living in the border areas, official sources said.
"The security set-up along the Line of Control (LoC) has been strengthened. For the first time intelligence persons and units have been deployed along the LoC with Pakistan to collect advance and target oriented inputs on infiltration," the sources added.
Army chief, General Deepak Kapoor too had told reporters in New Delhi in the recent past that infiltration had increased this year. Sources said tactical deployment of forces was done along the LoC to check militants from crossing over.
The forces had also taken other steps, such as electrification of three-tiered border fencing and installation of heat sensing electronic gadgets and night vision devices (NVDs).
"As another tier of security inside the LoC, police have set-up border posts for generating local intelligence to foil infiltration bids," the sources added.
Sources said infiltration also increased during 2009. "During 2008, gross infiltration (attempts) was estimated at 342 and net infiltration was 57 (those who succeeded), whereas in the year 2009, the gross infiltration was estimated at 485 and net infiltration was 113."
As per police figures, 535 infiltration attempts were made in 2007, while 2006 reported 573 such attempts along LoC and IB in Jammu and Kashmir.
The highest number of 1,373 infiltration bids took place in 2003 followed by 537 in 2004 and 597 in 2005, according to figures of the police.
An estimated 57 militants crossed over to this side in 2008 from the LoC. It was 311 militants in 2007 and 317 in 2006, sources said.
