Qazi stresses need for strengthening functioning of PCB
Aijaz calls for making state pollution free

Srinagar, October 13 - A joint meeting of Pollution Control Board PCB and Integrated Watershed Development Project (IWDP) was convened here today to review the functioning of these departments. Minister for Forest, Environment and Housing and Urban Development Qazi Mohammad Afzal chaired.
Minister of State for Forest, Agriculture and Higher Education Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Khan, Chairman, Pollution Control Board and Project Chief of IWDP and PWMP Mr. R. D. Tiwari, Regional Director, Pollution Control Board and other senior officers and engineers of various wings attended the meeting.
The meeting held threadbare discussion on the functioning of Pollution Control Board and IWDP and took several decisions to further improve their functioning.
It was given out in the meeting that office complex of Board at Raj bagh is coming up at a cost of Rs.4.60 crore and Rs.2.95 crore stand utilized on the complex by the end of last fiscal year.
A detailed presentation was made which revealed that Watershed Project has two broad components namely institutional strengthening and watershed development protection. The institutional strengthening focuses an improving community capacity building, information, marketing, monitoring and evaluation system and providing support to project coordination. The watershed development and protection focuses on promoting proven locally adopted vegetative technology and mechanical structure through active participation of beneficiaries to conserve moisture and soil erosion.
The meeting was told that watershed project area including 2 sub-watersheds in sub tropical Jammu and 2 in temperate Kashmir covering an area of 1.11 lakh hectares. In Jammu, the watersheds are located at Ramnagar and Akhnoor and at Rajwar and Rambiara in Kashmir.
Addressing the meeting, Minister for Forests emphasized the need for streamlining activities and functioning of PCB keeping pace with the fast changes taking place in respect of traffic movement and new coming up of industrial units in the state. He called for devicing new projects, which could benefit the common people of the state. He stressed the officers and field functionaries to perform their duties with added zeal and sprit to minimize the problems of the people.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Khan said that there is greater need to bring improvement in the department adding model of the project should be comprehensive. He said that the pollution control is a vast subject adding that need is to make it more effective. Mr. Khan said that the state should be free from pollution so that more and more tourists could feel pollution free atmosphere. In this regard we should act in advance, he added.
