| Inter-district Recruitment Row | | 3 MLAs among 200 BJP activists arrested | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 29: At least 200 BJP activists, including three BJP MLAs, were arrested by the police here today while they were carrying out an anti-government protest demonstration over the issue of banning of inter-district recruitment. Hundreds of BJP's Anusuchit Jaati Morcha activists under the leadership of Morcha President Chaman Lal Kanathia gathered at Indira Chowk and started their "Secretariat Chalo" march to register their protest against state government's move to ban Inter-District Recruitment. Raising anti-government and anti-CM slogans, the BJP activists, including three MLAs Prof Gharu Ram Bhagat, Durga Dass and Bharat Bhushan, when reached Shalamar Chowk, were intercepted by a heavy contingent of police and CRPF personnel leading to a minor scuffle between the two sides. In protest against the police action, the Morcha activists staged a dharna and later courted arrests. "They were not allowed to move towards Civil Secretariat and in violation of section 144, police arrested over 200 activists, including the MLAs, police said, adding, "We did not use force or cane charge". "We warn government not to ban inter-district recruitments. It would be considered as anti-Jammu and anti-SC decision," Gharu Ram told media persons. Earlier, Chaman Lal Kanathia and other leaders, while addressing the activists, came down heavily on NC-Congress coalition government in the state for taking anti-SC decision in order to deprive them of their constitutional rights. They said the move of the government to bring a bill in the state assembly to impose ban on inter district recruitment, if implemented, will debar the SC candidates to apply for any reserved post in any district in Kashmir province as the population of the members of this community in valley is almost zero. Morcha leaders alleged that it is being done under a well planned conspiracy to give benefit to a particular community in Kashmir as the reserved seats will be given to these people after claming that no SC has applied for the same. BJP leaders warned the government not to take any step which harms the interests of the SC community and declared that people in thousands will come on roads in case then government does not mend its attitude towards the Scheduled Castes. They also urged the SC MLAs of other parties to oppose this move of the government as they represent 'Dalits' in the assembly. |
