| Govt to create "transformer bank" to ensure uninterrupted power supply | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 29: To ensure uninterrupted power supply to consumers, the government is contemplating to create a "transformer bank". Official sources said new transformers would be purchased and then stored in the "bank" so that whenever a transformer was damaged in a locality, it was immediately replaced with a new one. Sources said an amount of Rs 30 cr would be alloted for the purpose. Apart from this, the government would also take some concrete steps to improve the power transmission and distribution system to check the high rate of power losses. Sources said the government was worried because of the wide gap between the expenditure on power purchase and the revenue receipts. For 2010-11, the government has earmarked Rs 2,050 cr for the purchase of power. But against this, the target set for realisation of revenue is Rs 1,055 cr. Even if the PDD achieved the target, there was going to be a loss of Rs 1,000 cr, the sources added. Sources said in a bid to reduce the gap between the expenditure and the revenue receipts, the government intended to table two bills in the state legislature. One was Electricity Bill and the other, Electricity Conservation Bill. Sources said the basic need in Jammu and Kashmir was to initiate measures for checking transmission and distribution losses. In fact, the transmission system was quite weak which left scope for the high rate of leakages, the sources added. Besides this, there were several thousand unauthorised power consmers. The government needed to keep a check on them too, sources said. |
