| HC directs police to file status report in murder, rape case | | MLA alleged to be shielding prime accused | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 31: In an alleged case of abduction and gang rape of a 21-year-old girl at Udhampur over 18 months back, high court judge, Justice Sunil Hali today directed SSP and SHO of Udhampur to file a status report in the case. The alleged incident occured on September 25, 2008, but police registered FIR in the case on February 11 this year, ie after over 18 months. An MLA was alleged to be shielding the prime accused, who was evading arrest. The court directive came today in a writ petition filed by the victim's brothers -- Joginder Pal and Subash Chander. In their petition, the duo prayed to the court to hand over investigation in the case to CBI as local police was allegedly under the influence of the accused, who were rich and influential people. Alleging that the police were hell bent to hush up the case, they demanded to transfer it to CBI for its impartial probe. They alleged that their sister was abducted, gang raped and later brutally murdered on September 25, 2008 at T-Morh, Udhampur, by the alleged accused -- Pankaj Singh, Pritam Kumar, Subash Chander, Rajan Kumar and Jagdish Singh. They said on September 25, 2008, armyman Purshtom Kumar, who was witness to the girl's abduction by the accused at T-Morh, had approached SHO of Udhampur police station and narrated him the whole incident. The SHO, however, did not act on the complaint. Had he acted, the girl could have been saved, Joginder and Subash said in their petition. The girl's decomposed body was recovered from a nullah in the area on October 3. The post-mortem report of the girl showed that she was gang raped and then ruthlessly murdered, according to the petition. It took police 18 months to register FIR in the case which showed that they tried their best to shield the accused, the petition alleges. he victim's brothers alleged that a local politician and MLA was trying to shield the absconding main accused Pankaj Singh by allegedly using his influence on the district administration. Under the prevailing circumstances, the police investigation was expected to be unfair and biased, they alleged, praying to the court to transfer the case to CBI. |
