4/1/2010 12:07:08 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Mar 31: Alleging that police-criminal nexus had taken roots in the state, people of Majalta near here today warned if the government did not
act, they would be forced to take law in their hands and hold violent protests. When chief minister Omar Abdullah and union minister Farooq Abdullah could personally intervene in the double murder of Asiya and Nilofar in Kashmir, why they were silent in the alleged rape and murder of 12th class student Reshu Devi (18) at Bilaspur, Majalta, few days back.
Hundreds of people, including women, gathered at the Bilaspur panchayat ghar in the morning and held a strong demonstration against police and administration. This was the second case of alleged rape and murder in Jammu region. Earlier, a 21-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped and murdered at T-Morh in Udhampur on September 25, 2008. In both the cases, police were alleged to be making efforts to shield the accused. In the Udhampur case, FIR was registered in February this year, ie 18 months after of the commission of the crime.
The agitated people alleged that the Omar-led coalition government had different policies for Kashmir and Jammu regions. "Whenever an incident of rape or exploitation of women takes place in Kashmir, the government is up in arms against police, but when such an incident takes place in Jammu, it maintains a criminal silence," they asserted.
They said in the Majalta case, police had astonishingly failed to nab the accused, who stood identified. The protesters later held a meeting in the Bilaspur panchayat ghar and observed two-minutes silence in the honour of the departed soul.
Speaking on the occasion, R S Pathania, a social worker, said police had miserably failed to protect the lives of innocent citizens, especially girls and women.
On one side, a national consensus was being evolved to empower women through reservations, on the other, police were allegedly protecting the criminals involved in heinous crimes. Taking a potshot at local police, Pathania said a sense of insecurity prevailed among women in the area after the incident. He said It was shocking that police had failed to arrest the accused, who stood identified.
Pathania warned to adopt the agitational path if police failed to catch hold of the accused soon and do justice in the case. He also demanded Omar's intervention in the case.He asked police to expedite the process of procuring the vaginal swabs and post-mortem samples of the victim.
Other people, who spoke on the occasion, expressed grave concern over increasing criminal activities in the area, including sale of narcotics and liquor, extortion and theft cases.
While the people planned to take out a procession, SHO of the concerned police station reached the spot and assured them that SSP and DIG would visit them Thursday. Prominent among those, who spoke on the occasion, included K D Singh, DAHWA chairman Surat Singh Sumbria, Kirpal Singh, Channu Ram, Romesh Gupta, Des Raj Gupta, Karan Singh, Kuldip Singh, Balwant, Raghubir, Din Mohammad, Attar Singh and Rasal Singh, besides sarpanches and panches.
