| Don't ignore humane face of Army | | |
When the health authorities found an unprecedented upsurge in the number of people suffering from tuberculosis in the border district of Kupwara the Army medical team was requested to provide much needed assistance in tackling the problem.Reports said that the state Government authorities sought help from the Army medical team after they found that if the problem was not checked right now it could assume a serious dimension.What actually motivated the District Tuberculosis officer to seek help from the Army was the detection of 30 patients who were suffering from a deadly form of tuberculosis.So far over 900 people have been found suffering from tuberculosis.Well the high incidence of the disease needs to be probed by a special team of doctors from the Soura Institute of Medical Sciences and the Srinagar Medical College.Well as far as the state of Jammu and Kashmir is concerned the Army has played a vital role in coming to the rescue of people in both
war and peace time.During the last 60 years the Army has got engaged in series of welfare programmes which have helped people,especially in the border areas,to lead a comfortable life.The Army has been holding medical and vaterinary camps in border belts and farflung areas on a regular basis.On an average more than 200 to 300 such camps are held each year at different places where the patients receive medicines free of cost.Reports say that on an average medicines worth Rs.five crores to Rs.10 crores are given to people every year.Over 55 primary health centres were being run by the Army in the state Imagine the other face of the Army.It has been running over 400 schools where more than 8,000 students are enrolled.Here the poor students receive their kit,books and other items free of cost from the Army.Scores of school buildings have been renovated and reconstructed in the rural belts.Under the Sadbhavana programme the Army has established more than
600 community centres where a provision for television connection and indoor games has been made.It has played a key role in establishing hydel projects and solar lights.Estimates say that during the last 20 years the Army has set up over 1,000 micro and mega hydel projects in various border areas and farflung belts of the state Construction of roads and providing employment avenues to the skilled and unskilled workers has been another healthy activity.Alas! the same Army is being tainted in black colours by the vested interests whenever there are some minor incidents of human rights violations.Not only the separatists even some mainstream political leaders have been campaigning in favour of withdrawal of troops from within the civilian areas.It is all part of politics and whereever some Army pickets have been withdrawn,especially in the border districts,people in those areas have staged protest demonstrations against the withdrawal of the security
pickets.They do so because they have felt unsafe in the absence of the Army pickets indicating that people treat the troops as their saviour.Whenever the state is ravaged by floods,by avalanches and by heavy snow it is the Army that is summoned to carry out rescue operations and to clear the roads blocked by avalanches,landslides and snow.Whenever tourists or civilians get trapped in snow storms or in avalanches the Army presses its helicopter fleet into services for lifting the stranded passengers.Rightly the Army deserve kudos and not the kicks for the services it provides to people in Jammu and Kashmir.(eom)
