| BJP leader visits Khour block, apprised of problems | | | Early Times Report Jammu, April 1 BJP State President Shamsher Singh Manha visited Kaleeth village in Khour block to take stock of the problems being faced by the farmers, here today. He was accompanied by party’s Anusuchit Jaati Morcha State President Chaman Lal Kanathia. While briefing Manhas about their sufferings, the local farmers said that they suffered losses of their crops last year and the current season too was going to be crop less due to poor rains. They said that the area lacks irrigation facilities and are totally dependent on rains. Besides no irrigational facilities, there is acute shortage of drinking water. As the crops suffer, fodder for cattle is also inadequate. They said that about 17 dug wells has been setup in Khour block with an estimated cost of 11-12 lakh per such dug well but there is no water in any of them. If all this continues and the government do not take immediate and effective steps, their is every possibility of migration to other places near water bodies, they feared. The people also expressed their resentment over supply of three months free ration to limited families only and depriving the poor of the same. They further told that the BPL scheme is not giving the benefits to the real deserving poor families of their village, rather its benefits are extended to the well off families having political connections with the leaders of the ruling coalition. Not only this the poor people living Kuchcha Houses are being deprived of the benefits of Indira Aawas Yojna, while this scheme is again misused to give benefit to those having political links. Same is the situation of supply of ration items in the government depots. These farmers demanded that the existing names under BPL category be cancelled and fresh survey conducted besides inquiring into non-functioning of dug wells as also extension of IAY scheme. The BJP chief gave a patient hearing and assured them that he will personally take up the matter with the concerned authorities and invited them to reach Jammu so that he can accompany them to the Divisional Commissioner to present their problems.
