| BAJ to intensify agitation over PRD Bill | | | Early Times report Jammu, Apr 2: Worries of Omar Abdullah led coalition government are far from over the contentious issue of private members Permanent Resident Disqualification bill. The pandora's box was opened with the introduction of the bill by the PDP MLC Murtaza Khan in the upper house of the state legislature during last month. The Bar Association of Jammu (BAJ) today threatened to intensify agitation if the government did not ensure withdrawal of the Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Certificate bill introduced in the state legislative council. He said various other organisations have decided to join hands together to spearhead a campaign to fight against the introduction of PRC bill. By calling Jammu bandh we intend to send a clear message to the government that the people of Jammu are opposing this bill and want the state government o make clear its stand once for all. He further said that as Assembly session will coming to an end on April 5, the government has not yet withdrawn the Women Disqualification Bill introduced in the Upper House. Legally, the bill would not have introduced in the Upper House, which is void. We want the bill to be defeated not only in this session but also in the next session to be held in Kashmir after Darbar move,'' he said. He further informed that BAJ has called the meeting of Jammu-based legislators would be held on April 4 to seek their support in defeating the bill in the House. "The government allowed the PRC bill to be introduced in the Upper House with a malafide intension though it is a constitutional amendment bill and could have only been introduced in the legislative assembly," President of the BAJ Sunil Sethi told reporters here. Legally, the bill would not have introduced in the Upper House, which is void. We want the bill to be defeated not only in this session but also in the next session to be held in Kashmir after Darbar move,'' he said. He also alleged that by presenting this type of bill, mistrust and wedge being created by political leaders and parties between the two regions will further increase. BAJ will launch awareness campaign for the people of Jammu about the pros and cons of the bill and different organizations, including political, religious and social are supporting BAJ. It is pertinent to mention here that the Permanent Resident (Disqualification) Bill was moved by the People's Democratic Party (PDP) on March 8, 2010 in the Upper House. The bill deprives the Jammu and Kashmir women of the right to own and inherit immovable property, get government jobs, voting and other privileges if they marry non-state people.
