EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 2: As of now, success is for sure on the side of security forces engaged in counter-insurgency (CI) operations in Rajouri's Kalakote
area. Within hours of killing six Pak militants in Tali Draman-Sarsoti forests of Kalakote Thursday, army and police Friday shot dead four
more Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) ultras of foreign origin in the nearby Sada Nangoli forests in about a seven-hour-long gunbattle.
With this, the troops have eliminated 16 top LeT militants, including 15 Pakistanis, in separate encounters with them in the
past one week.
Giving details, police sources said four militants were spotted by some locals in Sada Nangoli forests at about 10 am. After they reported the matter to security forces, police and army soon rushed to the forests and laid a cordon around the place where the militants were said to be hiding. Sources said while the troops were closing in on the suspected hideout, the militants opened heavy volume of fire on them at about 10.30 am. The troops retaliated.
An army jawan lost his life in the gunbattle at about 12 noon. He was identified as Lokesh Kumar. All the four militants were, however, shot dead by troops at about
5.15 pm when the exchange of fire came to an end. The slain militants belonged to LeT. Their identity was, however, yet to be ascertained. A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including four AK rifles, their eight magazines, several rounds, handgrenades and one pistol, was recovered from them.
The slain militants were believed to have stealthily crossed into the Indian territory from Jogwan in Pallanwalla on March 23 last. Eight farmers, including five women, had spotted the infiltrators while they were going to collect fodder for their cattle. The first contact with the infiltrators was made in Dharmsal area of Kalakote on March 27 and two terrorists were killed. The second contact was made in the area Tuesday, triggering an 18-hour gunbattle that lasted Wednesday and left four militants and
three soldiers dead.
Six LeT militants were eliminated by troops in an encounter in Tali Draman-Sarsoti forests of Kalakote yesterday evening. Last year, the state recorded 485 infiltration bids and security forces killed 101 intruders. This year, the number of infiltration attempts has already crossed 60.
