Natrang stages Special show of 'Bawa Jitto'

JAMMU, Apr 3: In the honour of 'Art Kaarvan' (A traveling group of International & National level artists & performers), Natrang performed its internationally acclaimed Dogri Play 'Bawa Jitto' at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium. The show was organized & supported by University of Jammu. Scripted by Padamshree Prof. Ram Nath Shastri & Directed by Balwant Thakur, the play has been critically acclaimed as one of the most creative theatre work produced in the country during the post India Independence period.
The production of the play 'Bawa Jitto' is set in the rural backdrop, this 15th century Folk tale portrays the age-old saga of exploitation of landless farmers by landlords. Due to the constant and persistent pressures of relatives, with a piece of land as bone of contention, Bawa Jitto, a hard working, farm less farmer is forced to leave his native village Aghar Jitto (Katra). Accompanied by his nine-year-old daughter, he takes shelter in the house of a friend in Shamachak (Jhiri), a nearby village. The efforts of his friend Rullo result in a land grant from landlord in Shamachak and one fourth of the produce is fixed as land revenue.
The hard work put in by him, the sweat and toil of Jitto turns a barren land into prolific treasure. This makes avaricious landlord to back out on his word and ask for major share of the crop. Helpless Jitto, unable to endure injustice, kills himself. The agony becomes boundless when Gauri, his little daughter immolates herself on her father's pyre.
Jyotsna Singh, Advisor Amar Mahal Museum & Library was the Chief Guest of the show. Prominent dignitaries among audience included Prof. R.D. Sharma, Dean Acadmic Affairs, Dr. P.S. Pathinia, Registrar, Prof. J.S. Tara, Dean Student Welfare, University of Jammu. At the conclusion of the show, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur & Jyotsna Singh were felicitated by the University of Jammu.
A team of thirty professional actors of Natrang enliven the six hundred year old saga in a magical style. Arvind Anand as Bawa Jitto performed in a highly professional manner and kept the audience spellbound. Renu Sharma as Chachi Jojan was very impressive. Juhi Singh as Bua Gauri ably performed the role. Anil Tickoo as Malli. Suresh Kumar as Mehta Vir Singh, Sanjeev Gupta as Isso, Vijay Bhatt as Sarpanch were so prefect in their portrayals that people were stunned to see their powerful acting. Neeraj Kant as Rullo and Sajra Qadir as Jeuni gave impressive performances. Others who did multiple roles on stage included Dimple Sharma, Mohit Sharma, Rohit Verma, Gaurav Jamwal, Pankush Verma, Pawan Verma, Rahul Singh, Gauri Thakur, Mohd. Yaseen, Prashant Sagar, Sona Singh, Richa Sharma, Rajani Bhatti, Amarpreet Kandhari, Romilla Besnet, Bipin Gupta, Ankush Lakhnotra & Ajay Kumar. Balwinder Singh looked after the hall management.
The Karkan singers Girdharl Lal and Harbans Lal who are the repositories of our narrative traditions gave engrossing performances.
The lights were designed & executed by Suraj Ganjoo and the show was coordinated by Sumeet Sharma.
