ARUN TRISAL
EARLY TIMES REPORT
KATHUA, Apr 3: Usually, state government spent crores of rupees on desliting of various canals in state to ensure smooth flow of water for irrigation to farmers. But this trend to save farmers, their crops and live stock had also become a trade for contractors and their God father at the helm of affairs. Live example to the apathy is deteriorating condition of the Ravi canal due to unprecedented growth of unwanted plants and other various kinds of grasses desisting free flow of water and damages beds of either sides of the canal.
Three years passed without desliting to remove unwanted produce of grass and repairmen of the canal due to the irresponsible and negligent attitude of the concerned department. With the result canal is damaged and turned into dense jungle which has created a major threat to irrigation systems of the area from Kathua to Vijaypur and eroded fertile land into danger drought. Non availability of timely water is another problem for which crores of rupees are sanctioned every year but major chunk of rupees goes into the pockets of the engineers of the concerned department along with responsible contractors in the name development of the Ravi canal.
Park ash Chand, Sat Paul, Sajjan Singh and many other farmers alleged that even all connected small sources connected to Ravi canals are dried and converted into a dense forest besides have broken from all sides but concerned department never took any interest to repair the irrigation facility. They suggested that sources providing water supply to Ravi needed to be streamlined as early possible besides efforts should be made to make the flow of water in the canal to provide water facilities to farmers. They said, otherwise, farmers are left with no choice other than to shift some other trade to earn livelihood.
