4/3/2010 11:37:22 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Apr 4: The leader of the BJP legislators party, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta has termed the congress national conference coalition as a curse for the people of the state and its failure on all fronts is evident from the growing resentment amongst different sections of the people resulting in spate of hartals, dharnas and anti-government demonstrations for their failure to keep up even the promises made by the ruling leaders. Addressing a meeting of the party activists to review the work done in connection with revision of the electoral rolls for the ensuing civic elections, he said that the faulty voters lists is another proof of the said functioning of this dispensation. Large numbers of voters are missing and so many others have been listed in a non-serious manner, he added and alleged that all this indicate the designs to make a mockery of the democratic process. He also pointed out that the basic democracies in this state were never allowed to function in a free and fair manner and the elections were never held in time despite claims about empowerment of these institutions, so much so, under considerations of separatism, the provisions of the Indian constitution were not extended to this state inspite of the promises made by the prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh as also by the governor NN Vohra to get extended the 73rd and 74th amendments of the constitution to Jammu and Kashmir.
Castigating the leaders of the Pradesh congress, Prof Gupta accused them of being faithful to the chairs than to the rights of the people. Quoting from a government reply to a question in the Upper House, he pointed out that as per official figures during 2008-09, the Revenue earned by Jammu Municipal Corporation was Rs 636 Lakhs and the Srinagar corporation earned Rs 603 lakhs. He pointed out that Jammu municipal corporation is having 71 wards with much bigger area than that of Srinagar Corporation having 68 wards but the salary of Jammu staff during the year was Rs 1874 lakhs whereas that of Srinagar Corporation Staff was Rs 3395 lakhs.
