| State to pursue with Centre ST status to Paharis: Sakina | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 3: The Government would vigorously pursue with the Centre the mater regarding grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Pahari speaking people. This assurance was given by the Minister for Social Welfare, Sakina Itoo, while replying to half an hour discussion, raised by Mohammad Rashid Qureshi in the Legislative Council today. The Minister said that the demand for granting ST status to Pahari speaking people was projected, earlier also, by the then Governor, Lt. Gen. (Retd), K. V. Krishna Rao in 1993 before the concerned Ministry. Even the State Legislature had passed a resolution in this regard, urging upon the Centre to accede to the demand of the Pahari speaking people, the Minister added. She said even the Working Groups, constituted by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, have also suggested grant ST status to the Pahari speaking people. The Minister said as Social Welfare Minister, she would herself project this demand before the concerned Union Ministry and would also bring the matter into the notice of Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah so that people of this community will be benefitted.
