| Pithu, Ponnywallas observe day long strike | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Katra, Apr 4: Vaishno Devi pilgrims had a tough time after hundreds of pithus and ponywallas went on a day-long strike in Katra. Large number of pithus and ponywallas gave a call for the day-long strike demanding their tenderization under the Municipal Corporation instead of private agencies.
Amidst slogans, hundreds of pithus and ponywallas assembled outside the Municipal Corporation office and protested against tenderization to private contractors. ''We want that tenders of pithus and ponywallas should be issued by the Municipal Corporation instead of involving private contractors, who are running a nexus with some of the government officials,'' leader of the Katra Pithu and Ponywalla Union told.
However, MP Lal Singh, Minister for Roads and Buildings G M Saroori and Minister of State for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik paid a visit to the town and assured them that the issue would be settled in a week. ''After ministers' assurance, we have called off the strike for a week but if nothing concrete comes out by them, the agitation will resume,'' the leader added.
