| Declare 'May Day' as national holiday: Shastri | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 4: The President of the National Mazdoor Conference Subash Shastri, in a memorandum sent to Dr. Manmohan Singh, has urged upon him that May day should be declare as National Holiday, so that the salaried class remember the sacrifices of martyrs of 1886 who laid their lives for the betterment and protection of rights of working class of world. He said that during the VP Singh regime it was decided to declare May day as a national holiday, what due to some unknown factors the decision could not be implemented till date. He expressed hope the present prime minister (Dr. Singh) will take an early decision in this regard. In the memorandom Shastri, has also appealed Dr. Singh to provide special package to Jammu & Kashmir and other re-source deficit states to fully meet the expenditure on account of 6th Pay commission report in favour of their employees & pensioners. Shastri pleaded that all sections of employees across the country should get full benefits of the sixth pay commission report and for this purpose the Central government and the planning commission should find ways and means to provide special funds to the needy states. Shastri further expressed his concern that the 13th finance commission did not address this demand of J&K and other states which has disappointed the employees and the pensioners. He also pleaded for raising the income tax limit to upto Rs three lakhs.
