| SWC head asks for introduction of Women's Reservation Bill | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Apr 04: Observing that domestic violence against women had gone up in J&K over the past two decades, the State Women Commission (SWC) chairperson Shameema Firdous today felt that the Women's Reservation Bill could help them in leading a life with honour and dignity. She asked the government to introduce the bill in the state legislature to safeguard the rights of women. "Women in Kashmir have gone through hell. Domestic violence against them has shown a spurt over the past 20 years. We need to stand up to protect their rights," she told reporters here. Firdous, who also heads the women wing of National Conference (NC), said the bill should soon be moved in the state legislature to safeguard the rights of the fair sex. Since 1999 when SWC was set up, it had succeeded in resolving a number of marital fueds amicably, but, more needed to be done, she said. A total of 2,000 cases were registered with the commission, out of which 500 were disposed off. As many as 800 cases of marital discords were received from Kashmir and 700 from Jammu, she added. She said the Domestic Violence Bill, which had already been introduced in the state legislature, should be passed. "No body should oppose it," she demanded. Advocating the setting up of "family courts" where women should be judges as well as prosecutors, she said this would help the women victims speak out the truth without fear. "I have urged the government to allow the formation of family courts and I hope it would be a reality soon," she added. On fielding women in upcoming local bodies and panchayat elections, she said the party was finalising the names of women candidates. "We will be fielding deserving candidates this time round," she said. |
