Rehman demands probe into alleged bungling in earthquake relief
10/13/2006 10:14:28 PM
JAMMU OCT-13- Samajwadi President of the State Unit Sheikh Abdul Rehman has demanded a judicial probe into the alleged bungling and misappropriation of relief meant for the earthquake victims of the State.
Addressing media persons, prior to his departure for Haridwar to attend the Party’s National Executive meeting, the SP leader alleged that a major chunk of earthquake relief, both cash and in kind, has been swindled by the politicians of the ruling parties and their sycophants in connivance with the local administration. He said that the affected people of Poonch, Uri and Tangdhar and other areas are still clamoring hard for payment of relief and compensation but no body is going to listen to their problems. He urged for a probe by an officer or a judge of repute into the alleged bungling.
Referring to the coalition government, Rehman said that its performance has remained far from satisfactory during the last four years adding that no visible achievement was witnessed on militancy, corruption and unemployment fronts and there had been no development works in the far off and hilly areas of the State.
He said that ‘umpteen claims and declarations made by the government have by and large remained confined to statements only and there was nothing on ground’ .In this context he cited the example of State Accountability Commission, State Commission for Women and State Human Rights Commission which have been rendered ineffective with no body to head these vital institutions.
As regards Congress-PDP alliance, the SP leader said both are poles apart on vital issues adding that while PDP is harping on self- rule and demilitarization mooted by Pak President, the Congress on the other hand has been opposing it tooth and nail.
‘Saying that SP in a short span of one year has expanded organizationally through out the state’, Rehman said that the party’s main objective is to address itself to the problems of the people and prepare its units to launch a sustained struggle in this regard.
